German Apple Cake
Adapted from the recipe of Julia Foerster
Ingredients:
- 4 small apples, peeled, quartered, cored, and sliced into thin wedges from the outside in, but not all the way through, so that the quarters still hang together in the center
- 1 tsp. cinnamon powder
- ½ tsp. nutmeg
Wet ingredients:
- ½ cup soft butter
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 tsp. lemon juice
- 3 large eggs
Dry ingredients:
- 1½ cups flour
- 2 tsp. baking powder
- ¼ tsp. salt
- 2 Tbsp. mil,
Topping:
- powdered sugar
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F
- Mix wet ingredients (butter, sugar, vanilla extract, lemon juice, milk, and eggs)
- Mix dry ingredients (flour, baking powder and salt)
- Combine wet and dry ingredients to form a batter.
- Grease bottom of 9" or 10" spring form pan.
- Spread batter on bottom of pan.
- Coat apple slices with cinnamon powder and nutmeg, then spread on top of batter with the round part of the quarters facing up.
- Bake in lower third of oven for about 45 minutes until slightly browned. When done, a toothpick should come out clean.
- Sprinkle powdered sugar on top.
- Let cake cool before serving.
